Kolkata: Bringing about a change that’s what he believes in and that’s how he dared to start his own game development and VR development company Virtual Infocom in 1998, Arijit Bhattacharyya who appeared as a speaker on 3rd day of #MediaNext.
#MediaNext2020 is a 10 day webinar being organized by Adamas University in Kolkata jointly with Sharda University, Birla Global University, DME, AIMEC, Lok Samvad Sansthan, exchange4media, ABP Education and IndiaReal.in, Each day of the conclave focuses on one specialised domain of the Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on that specific domain.
“I’m a technologist, founder of an wonderful technology company, non-executive director of others, and a restless entrepreneur with a passion for creating feedback loops between innovation and teams and revenue streams, applying new and old business models to changing industries, and pushing people to do the very best they can do”, he said introducing himself.
A human brain always tries to consider virtual world as their real world for a minute. Thus how we define real completely depends on how our brain perceives it. Relationship between virtuality and reality is always an important process of game creation.
He also talked about his works that are mostly related to mythology and culture, Asthawama is probably India’s one of the first role playing game. His main aim is to maintain balance in both tradition and technology.
“You need to have solid team for localisation and you need to have a partner to publish your game”, he said which indicates how promotion plays a role in distribution.
He also discussed about collaboration and how is it significant for game development. He gave an instance of his well known game production. Shaktiman in 3D was actually inspired by the character played by actor Mukesh Khanna. Thus collaboration with models and actors has really helped him in taking game creation development in India to the next level.
The next thing he pointed is how gaming helps in promotion? In 21st century a game can be produced, which is inspired by a character in a particular movie; which is an interesting way to promote. Thus there’s a connection between movies and gaming and this has a high scope in terms of business, promotion and distribution. He also brought the movie based game production into Bengal.
He also talked about the software for building 3D characters but what he feels most important is to do normal actual drawings as he said “If you are an artist you can draw with the pencil, or a sketch or colour, well software is basically a tool and you can use it for your purpose …but real jadoo is in your hand”.
In 2016, he built a plugin which can convert normal drawing into 3D polygon that became strength for his team as a result gave him lot of flexibility to work master than some other studios.
“It’s your responsibility as game developer what to choose, how to choose, what to show and how to show; if the right kind of method you can take you can earn very good amount of money” According to him while talking about advertisement collaboration with online games, per installation of one brand advertisement can give you 4 dollars to 10 dollars. By giving this example he made us understand the power of advertisements.
Most Indian gamers focus more on games from which they can make money rather than character based games. Thus awareness is needed among people to increase the rate of playing character based games.
He also made a brief comparison between Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, where AR is more advanced in terms of brand awareness, comparability, user engagement and sales boosting.
At the end of his session there was a round of question answer where one question being asked by a media aspirant that “Is normal digital game killing the good old days of chess playing?” He answered that on the other hand, digital game actually helps people to stay in touch with their friends who stay far away from them.
