12 years of The Dirty Picture: The story of director Milan Luthria's cinematic journey

The Dirty Picture is completing 12 years today and Milan Luthria has revealed his special memories of the film. The film The Dirty Picture was a biographical musical film inspired by the life and times of late actress and dancer Silk Smita. The film has completed 12 years today.

Directed by Milan Luthria and starring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor in pivotal roles, the film was released worldwide on 2 December 2011 in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil languages. Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures, the film became a mega hit. And grossed more than 100 crores at the box office.

One of Luthria's most famous and ambitious works, the film became a superhit. Talking about it, Millan says that making "The Dirty Picture" was a journey full of challenges. There were many challenges and there were many questions about where to start. At first we faced hurdles in casting but my choice of Vidya Balan was successful. Filming posed another challenge as Vidya's image was incongruous with her character yet Vikram Gaikwad's quick transformation brought Reshma to life. Our last challenge was when the distributors pitched in. There were concerns about the title but Ekta Kapoor's determination ensured the release of the film by investing her own money. And on the Monday after the release, there was a special women-only show in India."
