Kerala Schools to Teach the Inspiring Story of Mumbai's Dabbawalas
Thiruvananthapuram - The Education Department of the Government of Kerala has decided to include the remarkable history of Mumbai's Dabbawalas in the school curriculum. This move aims to inspire students with the entrepreneurial spirit and dedication of the Dabbawalas, who have been delivering lunchboxes with precision and care for over a century.
The story of the Dabbawalas, who started with just 35 coaches in 1890 under the leadership of Mahadu Hawji Bachche, is a testament to their hard work and commitment. Despite being mostly illiterate (85%), they have built a reputation for reliability and efficiency, serving over 5000 customers in Mumbai daily.
The idea of the Dabbawalas was born when a Parsi officer, tired of traveling home for lunch, asked a man to bring his lunchbox from home instead. This simple yet innovative solution has evolved into a iconic service, with the Dabbawalas using a complex network of trains, bicycles, and footwork to deliver over 200,000 lunchboxes daily.
By teaching this inspiring story, Kerala schools aim to instill values of entrepreneurship, teamwork, and customer service in their students.
