President's rule for 2 years
We have told the Governor. We also discussed what can be the solution to this problem. The Governor has taken note of our issue and will start action in the interest of the people. Will he stake claim to form government? When asked, he said that the central leadership of BJP will take a decision in this regard. President Satyavrat has met 44 MLAs individually and jointly. There is no one opposing the formation of a new government. People are suffering a lot. He said that two years were wasted due to Covid in the last term and another two years were wasted due to conflict in this term.
Current strength in the assembly
In May 2023, BJP leader N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister following criticism of his government's handling of the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo. Since then, President's rule has been imposed in Manipur since February. Currently, there are 59 MLAs in the 60-member assembly, one of which is vacant due to the death of one MLA. The BJP-led coalition has a total of 44 MLAs, including 32 Meitei MLAs, three Manipuri Muslim MLAs and nine Naga MLAs.
The Congress has five MLAs, all Meitei. Besides, the remaining 10 MLAs are Kuki, seven of whom won the last election on a BJP ticket, two are from the Kuki People's Alliance and one is an independent.
