In one of its orders on Monday, the Supreme Court has extended the deadline to take a decision on the disqualification of Ajit Pawar group MLAs. According to the order, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar will now be able to take a decision on the disqualification of MLAs by February 15. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud passed the order on the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Speaker asked for more time for decision

On which the bench extended the deadline for decision till 15 February. Earlier, the Supreme Court had fixed January 31 as the deadline for the Speaker to take a decision on disqualification. Sharad Pawar faction leader Jayant Patil had filed a petition before Speaker Rahul Narvekar appealing for disqualification of Ajit Pawar faction MLAs under the anti-defection law. Under the leadership of Ajit Pawar, many NCP MLAs had joined NDA on July 2 last year. Ajit Pawar faction has filed a petition in the Election Commission demanding to consider him as the real NCP. It has also staked claim on the party's election symbol, a clock.

Ajit Pawar faction has also filed a petition before the Speaker. Ajit Pawar faction's chief whip Anil Patil has filed an affidavit alleging that the party was being administered by Sharad Pawar, which is in violation of the provisions of the party constitution. Patil said that organizational elections were not even conducted within the party and Sharad Pawar is running the party in a dictatorial manner. Patil claimed that Ajit Pawar was elected president of the party in June last year. The Election Commission was also informed in this regard.
