Today International Women's Day is being celebrated all over the world. This time the theme of Women's Day is 'Inspire Inclusion' which means a world where everyone gets equal rights and respect. How much progress women are making in any country can be gauged from women's participation in that country's democracy. Today in India, women's participation is continuously increasing in fields like politics, industry-economy, education, bureaucracy and army. Talking about the political system, the highest participation so far was in the 17th Lok Sabha.

22 women MPs in first election
The first Lok Sabha elections were held in 1951-52. In the country's first general elections, a total of 22 women were elected as MPs and reached the Lok Sabha. Elections to the second Lok Sabha were held in 1957. In this election also, a total of 22 women reached the Lok Sabha after being elected as MPs. The number of women MPs increased in the third Lok Sabha. A total of 31 women became MPs in 1962.

The number of women MPs decreased in the fourth Lok Sabha. In 1967, only 29 women were elected MPs. In the fifth Lok Sabha i.e. 1971, 21 women reached Parliament.

The lowest number was in 1977
Women representation declined in the 1977 Lok Sabha elections held after the Emergency. Only 19 women became MPs in the sixth Lok Sabha. The lowest number of women elected to the Lok Sabha was in 1977 only. There has never been a time in history when women did not even reach the age of 20.

The number of women MPs increased once in the seventh Lok Sabha. In 1980, 28 women became Lok Sabha MPs. Women representation improved significantly in 1984. In this way, 42 women candidates won in the eighth Lok Sabha. Female representation decreased once again in 1989. Only 29 women reached the lower house of Parliament in the ninth Lok Sabha.

In the 10th Lok Sabha, there was once again an increase in women's participation in Parliament. In the elections held in 1991, 37 women became Lok Sabha MPs. In the 11th Lok Sabha i.e. 1996, the number of women MPs increased to 40. Elections for the 12th Lok Sabha were held in 1998. A total of 43 women reached Parliament in this election. 49 women candidates have won in the 13th Lok Sabha. This Lok Sabha election was held in 1999.

In the 14th Lok Sabha held in 2004, the number of women MPs decreased to 45. Elections for the 15th Lok Sabha were held in 2009. 59 women MPs were elected in this election.

Most women became MPs in 2019
In 2014, the number of women MPs increased to 62. These were the elections for the 16th Lok Sabha. After this, the highest number of women won in the elections held in 2019. A total of 78 women reached Parliament after winning the 17th Lok Sabha elections.
