A school that encourages sports education as part of curriculum

Edify International School at Hinjewadi Pune is an IB candidate school for PYP and MYP. The school encourages students to play sports like basketball, football, tennis, skating, volleyball, swimming and squashas it boosts self- esteem and confidence. Their initiative is to inculcate sports in the curriculum from Nursery onwards creating a healthier generation of children by involving all students in physical education and sports. As part of this initiative, Edify International School Pune recently hosted the first ‘Edify Chess Tournament’ on December 8th, 2018. Ms. Chand Budhrani, the School Director said – “We were honored to have Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand to play a simultaneous exhibition match with top 12 qualifiers. It was a unique opportunity for all of us to witness this event.

Research has proven repeatedly that physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills and attitudes and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance. At Edify, it has been observed that involvement in sports has enhanced concentration, attention as well as improved classroom behavior for students. They also encourage students to play team sports like basketball and football as it creates a sense of belonging in them and encourages them to work with others to build a team spirit.

Participating in sports teaches students life skills such as team building skills, critical and creative thinking skills thereby making them more participative and responsible human beings. As Mr. Vishwanathan Anand also reiterated that Edify as a school is focused and passionate in building critical thinking skills by encouraging young minds to think critically, to challenge themselves to do things everyday they couldn’t do before, both in chess and life to accept winning and losing outcomes gracefully.
