Gita Gopinath Leaves IMF to Return to Academic Roots

– Gita Gopinath, the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will step down from her role at the end of August. She plans to return to Harvard University, where she will continue her work as an economics professor.
In a post on X, Gopinath said, "I am going back to my academic roots. I want to focus on research and teaching the next generation of economists." She has been with the IMF since 2018, as Chief Economist and later as First Deputy Managing Director.
Traditionally, the IMF’s top deputy is chosen by the United States and officially appointed by the IMF’s Managing Director. The current head of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva, said a replacement for Gopinath will be announced soon.
Before joining the IMF, Gopinath taught economics at Harvard for more than 10 years. She is now returning to the same university as the Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics.
Her departure comes a little earlier than expected, as most deputies serve for about five years. Gopinath leaves after three and a half years in the role.
The IMF thanked her for her service and contributions to global economic policies during her time there.
