Pune MP Girish Bapat passed away
He breathed his last at Mangeshkar Hospital after a long illness
Pune: BJP MP from Pune Girish Bapat passed away at the age of 73 due to long illness. Bapat was ill for the past few days. He was admitted to Dinanath Hospital in Pune yesterday as his condition worsened. He died this afternoon while undergoing treatment. His last rites will be held at Vaikunth crematorium at 7 pm with royal funeral.
Girish Bapat started politics from 1973 when he was working in a telco company. Since then till date he has been active in politics. He has played an important role in the successful movement of BJP in Pune. He was known as Girish Bapat, the strength of Pune. His death has created a big void in the BJP. He had worked hard to grow the BJP party in Kasba constituency in Pune and other Pune. Although Bapat was a BJP leader and MP, he was friendly with all party leaders and workers. He entered politics through a trade union while working as a telco employee. In 1983, he was elected as a corporator in Pune Municipal Corporation. He was elected as a corporator three times in a row.
Girish Bapat was defeated in the Kasba Peth Legislative Assembly by-election held in 1993. After that, he did not look back in politics. Since 1995, he had won five consecutive MLAs in Kasba Peth constituency. He has served as minister of many departments in the state cabinet and as guardian minister of Pune. After that, he was elected as MP of Pune in 2019 with a record number of votes.
