Today, India celebrates Teacher's Day to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India and a renowned scholar, philosopher, and teacher. This day is dedicated to recognizing the tireless efforts and contributions of teachers who shape the lives of students and society as a whole.
History of Teacher's Day
In 1962, when Dr. Radhakrishnan assumed office as the President of India, his disciples approached him to celebrate his birthday on September 5. Instead, he suggested celebrating it as Teacher's Day, emphasizing the importance of teachers in society. Since then, Teacher's Day has been celebrated annually on September 5.
Importance of Teacher's Day
Dr. Radhakrishnan dedicated 40 years of his life to teaching and always stressed the significance of respecting teachers. He believed that true teachers play a vital role in guiding society and imparting knowledge on how to face adversity. Therefore, it is essential for both society and the government to recognize and appreciate the contributions of teachers.
Global Celebrations
While India celebrates Teacher's Day on September 5, UNESCO declared October 5 as World Teachers' Day in 1994. Other countries like Russia, Australia, China, Germany, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, UK, and Iran celebrate Teacher's Day on different days, highlighting the global recognition of teachers' importance.
Let us take a moment to appreciate and thank our teachers for their selfless dedication and hard work. Happy Teacher's Day!
