Sculptor Jaydeep Apte Arrested in Connection with Ch. Shivaji Maharaj Statue Collapse
Kalyan : In a dramatic turn of events, sculptor Jaydeep Apte was arrested by police at his Kalyan residence in connection with the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Malvan. Apte, who had been absconding for several days, was apprehended after a massive search operation involving seven teams.
According to sources, Apte had returned to his Kalyan home to meet his family under the cover of darkness. However, police were hot on his trail and arrested him after receiving a tip-off from his wife.
Apte attempted to disguise himself with a cap, mask, and handkerchief but was identified by police at the building gate. He became agitated and began crying, begging to be allowed to go home. However, police took him into custody and transported him to the DCB office for further questioning.
The arrest comes after a case was registered against Apte following the statue's collapse. The opposition had accused the state government of shielding Apte, prompting a speedy search operation.
Apte's family had temporarily relocated to Shahapur to stay with relatives but returned to Kalyan, where they were interrogated by police.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
