Contract Workers Protest Against Pay Disparity in Public Works Department!
Mumbai, Ramesh Autade
Contract workers employed by the Public Works Department (PWD) have launched a protest at Azad Maidan, led by labor leader Krishna Bhoir, demanding equal pay for equal work. Despite performing the same tasks as permanent employees, contract workers are paid a mere Rs 15,000, while permanent employees receive a salary of Rs 1 lakh.
The PWD maintains a workforce of 2,500, with contract workers being repeatedly assured of resolution to their grievances. However, no concrete action has been taken, prompting the protest.
Bhoir emphasized that a government policy decision could rectify the situation, ensuring contract workers receive a salary of Rs 1 lakh. Additionally, filling existing vacancies would provide employment opportunities for 1,500 individuals.
The protest highlights the plight of contract workers and demands an end to the pay disparity.
