Discussions about next year's assembly elections and the full-time presidency

New Delhi / Correspondent

An important meeting of the Congress Working Committee has been convened today to discuss the forthcoming Assembly elections in some states next year and the by-elections to elect a full-time party president. Also, the issue of putting factionalism within the party and re-entering the party in next year's elections will be discussed.

After the defeat of the Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the then President Rahul Gandhi resigned. Sonia Gandhi then took over as interim president. However, there is a growing demand for the party to have a full-time president. In that context, by December 2022, new members will be registered and party elections will be held from the district level to the national level to elect a full-time national president, the sources said.

Assembly elections are being held in some states early next year. Some party leaders are of the view that the focus should be on assembly elections in these states rather than on full-time presidential elections. However, as the Congress working committee also includes G-23 leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, it is certain that the meeting will discuss party elections and the full-time chairmanship.
