Afghanistan: Talks between Modi and Putin

New Delhi / Correspondent

According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a 45-minute telephone conversation about the situation after the Taliban took over Afghanistan and its possible impact on the world.

India's policy so far has been to support a democratic government in Afghanistan and to oppose the Taliban. India has also invested heavily in Afghanistan to rehabilitate it. Since the fall of the Taliban regime, the Indian government has provided everything from infrastructure to military training, education facilities, and incentives for Afghan students to study in India.

Russia, on the other hand, has always supported the Taliban. Russia's ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, has recently praised the Taliban. He has also announced his support for Taliban. While the United States and most of the world's major powers are opposed to the Taliban, Russia's support for the Taliban is also a major factor.

On this backdrop, curiosity is being expressed about what should have been discussed between the heads of countries with conflicting roles and global influence, and what the outcome would be.
