Haribhau Torane, also known as Torane Master, was a renowned truth seeker, writer, and social activist from Maharashtra. Born on July 17, 1892, in Medad, a small village in Solapur district, Haribhau was a prominent figure in the human liberation movement led by Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Haribhau's father, Bhau Torane, encouraged him to pursue education. With the help of Sonopant Kulkarni, a truth seeker in the village, Haribhau completed his primary education in Medad and later pursued further education in Pune. There, he was influenced by the truth seeker movement and went on to become a teacher.
Haribhau made significant contributions to the social movement, particularly after 1920, when he worked as a loyal colleague of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He opened a boarding school for children of the untouchable community in Pandharpur with the financial help of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj. As a writer, Haribhau was known for his jalsa, ideological texts, poems, songs, and prose. His notable works include "Shri Chokhamela Maharaj's Invasion of Pandharpur" and "Chavdintel Baicht", which attacked the religious and social inequality of the time. He also wrote a series of articles, "Katiche Sapate", under the pseudonym 'Weskar' in the Satyashodhak magazine Dinamitra. These articles provide valuable insights into the social, religious, and political events of that period.
Haribhau was also a skilled poet, and his songs, such as "Bhimbhupali" and "Parasthiti Bikat Kiti Amchi", reflect his social consciousness and commitment to the cause of social equality. His poetry has been widely appreciated, and his songs have been included in various collections of Ambedkarite literature.
