New Delhi: The Prime Minister's Professorship Program aims to elevate research and innovation in universities by inviting distinguished, superannuated, or retired scientists, and industry professionals to mentor faculty and students. The program seeks to enhance the research ecosystem of host universities to globally competitive standards.This program aims to foster a culture of excellence in research and innovation, promoting globally competitive standards in Indian universities.
Key Highlights
- Mentorship: Experienced professionals will guide faculty and students in undertaking high-impact research projects.
- Collaboration: Mentors will work with university departments to develop a plan for raising the R&D ecosystem.
- Research Lab Establishment: Mentors can contribute to establishing research labs or common research facilities with research/infrastructure funds or CSR funds.
- Funding Support: PM Professors will receive a fellowship of ₹30 lakh per annum and a research grant of ₹24 lakh per annum, along with a fixed overhead of ₹1 lakh per year.
Eligibility and Criteria
- Age: Minimum 55 years of age, with no upper age limit.
- Expertise: Distinguished records and exceptional contributions in engineering, science, technology, agriculture, medicine, or social sciences.
- University Commitment: Host universities must provide office space, laboratory, and library facilities.
Proposal Evaluation
- Academic and Professional Credentials: Evaluation based on publications, patents, awards, and past projects.
- Research Plan: Proposals should include a projected research plan for the next five years.
- Interdisciplinary Approach: Collaboration between at least two departments is mandatory.
Duration and Review
-Tenure: 5 years, with a performance review after 3 years by an expert committee.
