Gandhi's life and work depicted through stone paintings!

Pune: We always see people drawing pictures with colors and lines. However, writer and stone artist Anita Dubey has created a unique world of paintings from the colorful stones found around. Dubey has depicted the life of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, through stone paintings. These paintings not only give an experience of Gandhiji's life but also his life and work.

Originally from Bhopal, Anita Dubey currently lives in Kharadi, Pune. She developed the art of drawing pictures from stones due to her love for collecting pebbles and colorful and shaped stones since childhood. The exhibition of these paintings has been organized at the Gandhi Vichar Sahitya Sammelan organized by the Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi Trust. About the paintings made from stones and this art, Dubey said, My childhood was spent in Bhopal. During summer vacations, I used to go to Ajoli with my mother. Then we used to go to the banks of the Narmada river every day for a walk. Then I got into the habit of picking up and collecting colorful and different sized stones from the Narmada riverbed. Since there were a lot of stones collected in the houses, I started making different designs based on them. That is how the idea of creating paintings came to me. After marriage, I went to Ajoli less. Due to this, my relationship with the Narmada river also decreased. My husband was in the Air Force. Therefore, when I was transferred, I had to go to new states and cities as well as remote areas. During this journey, I collected stones and pebbles from different places. While living in Pune, an army officer gave me two bags of stones. A few years ago, when there was rioting in the country, my husband said that even after seventy years of independence, communal and religious violence is going on in our country. From the discussion that took place then, I started reading Bapu's literature. His thoughts and work had a deep impact on my mind. From there, I got the idea of drawing these pictures. I have drawn fifty pictures on Bapu's life and work. The stones in these pictures are multi-colored. They have not been broken and decorated. Their original color has been retained. These pictures have been drawn using stones and sticks. Mahatma Gandhi's experience of apartheid in Africa, his arrival in India, the freedom movement, the renunciation of clothes, non-violence, tolerance, Satyagraha and other events and values are seen through these pictures. This exhibition was organized in Bhopal, Delhi. It has been organized for the first time in Maharashtra and Pune. I have drawn many pictures on the life of Rabindranath Tagore as well as for the covers of books. I have been honored with various awards for this art.

About stone art...
Stones are called Prastar in Sanskrit. Cutting, trimming and carving stones to create shapes is called sculpture. Stone art is the work of changing stones from their original form (in terms of particles) to a larger size without any cutting and trimming. In which pictures are drawn using stones of different shapes and types, said Anita Dubey.

Gandhiji's thoughts always inspire us towards humanity. His thoughts are the way for a person to live a proper life. When I came up with the idea of making a picture of Gandhiji from stones, I did not think that I would be able to bring any scene to life. When I suddenly completely agreed with some of Gandhiji's ideas, one day I thought of working on Gandhiji's life. Gradually, I made four to five popular pictures of Gandhiji on stones. After some time, when I read books written on Gandhiji again, I thought that I should try making some scenes. About three-four years ago, Dandi Yatra was made from stones. Only then did I decide to write Gandhiji's life journey in stones. I have been working on Gandhiji for the last three years. In this Amrit Mahotsav of the country, the work done on Gandhiji through stone art collected from all over the country, through chalk, threads, stones, paper, bamboo sticks, is a salute to all those martyred countrymen, due to whose efforts and sacrifices we are the citizens of an independent and progressive India today, Anita Dubey expressed her feelings.
