Kolkata: The Coronavirus pandemic has impacted the world of events and the event management industry, requiring immediate and over-night transition to digital platforms. As webinars and electronic events flood digital media, event management industry giants, who were part of the #MediaNext 2020 Day 4 webinar on “Events and E-Events” on Thursday, felt that this is only temporary.
#MediaNext 2020 organized by the Kolkata based Adamas University in association with Birla Global University, Sharda University, DME, AIMEC, Lok Samvad Sansthan, exchange4media, ABP Education and IndiaReal.in The mega Conclave is organized for ten days from June 1, 2020, to June 10, 2020. Each day of the Conclave focuses on one specialised domain in Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry and the impact of the Covid19 on it.
Roshan Abbas, Co-founder of Kommune, Founder and Managing Director of Geometry and Encompass, Mentor-Partner at the Glitch and renowned screen and radio personality, began today’s session saying that the world of events is “the art of getting people to assemble.”
To be a good event manager, he said that there are some principles that students should abide by in order to excel in this career. Talking about his experience, he said that it was his love for entertainment, engagement and performance art, and an unending thirst for knowledge and curiosity that made him push through his boundaries.
He advised students to learn to be crisis managers and to be “curious collectors,” which will help them build contacts that will prove to be very crucial at any given crisis. As they keep feeding their curiosity and acquiring knowledge, they should also be generously passing it on because empowering people at their own level will help them grow successful in this business. He also mentioned that it is equally crucial to build long-lasting relationships with everyone from clients to light and sound engineers.
When asked what he visualises the post COVID-19 event world to be like, he said, “Social events and the world of events will never die because we are still humans who are social beings.” For the time being, however, it is important to adapt to current circumstances because the virtual world is the stage for performance and engagement. However, the switch to offline events will soon.
Roshan, lastly suggested the learners build a profile in LinkedIn as it is a professional space and helps the newcomers to get recommendations and connections. Finally, Abbas concluded by saying, “the current situation can’t paralyse you. God has given you knowledge, will, and creativity to continue your process”.
